Species of Fishes

There are over 50 species of fishes in the marsh. Some of the fishes like the Orange Chromide, Pearl Spot, Dwarf Gouramy, One-spot Filament Barb, Flying Barb, etc found commonly in the marsh have economic value as ornamental species. Others like the African Tilapia and the Mosquito Fish are invasive. The fish fauna of the marsh is a part of an extensive meta-population. There is a considerable amount of dispersal during the rainy season, especially when there are excess runoffs and floods. Likewise in summer the populations get fragmented into smaller and isolated pools. Fish form the primary source of food to a number of species of aquatic birds. Fishes are also excellent indicators of the health of wetland ecosystems.
